Running Dictation

’Running Dictation’ is a dictation activity designed to inject fun into the convention dictation exercise. It is conducted as a game and is especially suitable for learners in primary and secondary schools. These learners not only practise their spelling and punctuation skills but also learn to read in meaningful chunks and dictate accurately to their peers. This activity is designed for Upper primary, secondary & high school students in beginning and intermediate levels.

Audience: Elementary, Secondary

Audience Language Proficiency: Beginner, Intermediate

Duration: 15-20 minutes

Materials And Technology:

A dictation text suited to the learners’ level of proficiency. Not too long, preferably one which can be dictated in 5minutes e.g. a 10-line poem, a song, a short story or a joke. It shouldn’t be a text that the students are familiar with e.g. a pop song which they know.

Objective:
  • Practise writing with correct spelling and punctuation.
  • Practise reading phrases with correct pronunciation.
