Using Speech-to-Text Apps to Improve ELLs' spelling

by Amany AlKhayat |

There are many ESL/EFL students who have difficulties in writing due to the following reasons: 1- They have verbal fluency in L2 but struggle with writing English; 2- Their ability to write is either little or does not exist; 3- They have writing anxiety; 4- They have grammatical problems; 5- They struggle with Spelling.

These students can use one or more of the following applications to help them overcome their language problems:1- Dragon Dictation; 2- Evernote; 3- ListNote, SpellChecker, Notepad Lite , Note Everything, Keep, Voice Note

Here's a list of activities the students can do:
1- Students can record small sentences and review them. For example, in my Listening and Note-taking classes, I ask my students who have spelling problems to record a small paragraph of their notes and then compare the text that they dictated it to the App with their actual notes and we can discuss it during office hours or in the next class.
2- Students can record small sentences and can check it for grammar with the teacher.
