Handouts of activities for Adult Lesson: What to do if you are pulled over by a police officer?
Handout used for teaching adult ELLs about actions they need to perform when interacting with the police when they are stopped for a traffic violation.
Transportation Life skill: identify names of community destinations; addresses; public safety laws; signs; know how to interact with police
Literacy: recognize and write transportation words and signage including stop, caution, yield, walk, drive, and wait for the bus; knowledge and understanding of reading, listening to vocabulary about vehicle registration and insurance and Driver's license/ID.
Listening/speaking: Ask and respond to basic questions about transportation.
Examples: Where are you going? When you are stopped by the police, what do you do?
Students will be able to know how to interact with the police and what happens when they stop their vehicle and talk with a police officer. They will feel confident about how to act and what actions could be misinterpreted as "threatening" to an officer.
Activity Description:
Talk with students about identification they need in case they are stopped by police
- Do you know your address? How to give directions to your house? Right & left?
Your street address? Practice and answer these questions (Knowledge of street address and directions - right & left - should be review from prior lessons.) Possible instructional materials include:
- A handout with photos of traffic signs
- Photo of a car license plate with registration tabs
- Picture of car registration documentation
- Copy of Proof of car Insurance
