Practicing pronunciation in Japanese EFL classroom

by Najma Janjua |

L1 interference, especially in speech production, can be a significant problem in second language acquisition. The degree and level of interference can vary depending on the native language of the learner. Thus, methods and approaches to cope with the problem have to be created and adapted according to the linguistic background and needs of the specific learner populations. L1 interference is a significant problem in L2 performance by Japanese learners of English. This activity introduces a pronunciation practice guide created by the author specifically for use in the Japanese EFL classroom. The guide is comprised of 8 sets of English words whose pronunciations by the Japanese learners of English are commonly interfered with by their L1. Students practice reading aloud each line as guided by the teacher and according to the instructions described. This activity is designed for beginning and intermediate-level college students.
