In this 60-hour self-study course developed by English language teaching experts, you will learn appropriate methods and techniques for teaching language skills, vocabulary, and grammar to young learners and understand which assessments to use to measure your learners' progress.

In this course, you will learn:

  • The principles of language acquisition and how to address student needs and learning styles.
  • Techniques and methods for teaching language skills, vocabulary, and grammar to young learners in ESL and EFL contexts.
  • Assessment approaches and tools to evaluate student learning.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Discuss the types of activities that support young learners’ language acquisition.
  • Identify the key elements of effective young learner ESOL instruction.
  • Use different types of assessment tools for evaluating learners’ proficiencies in various skill levels. 

The course is divided into six modules, each with several tasks and a culminating activity:

Module 1: Child Development

Module 2: Language Acquisition & Learning

Module 3: Instructional Approaches to Teaching English to Young Learners

Module 4: Young Learners in an English Language Classroom

Module 5: Monitoring Student Learning and Assessment

Module 6: Planning for Learning

Note: Self-study courses do not count toward the TESOL Core Certificate Program (TCCP).

Teaching & Assessing Young Learners is designed for current or prospective teachers and administrators looking for a better foundation in teaching pre- to primary school-aged learners.

This self-study course allows you the flexibility to learn at your own pace.

TESOL online courses are asynchronous, which means that you can log in at any time. You should plan to spend approximately 10 hours in each module for a total of 60 hours.

Each module includes a variety of learning materials, including PowerPoint guides, video clips describing the objectives and goals for each module, readings, and quizzes. You must score 80% or higher on each module quiz before moving on to the next module.

When you finish the course, you will receive a certificate of completion listing the hours of professional development you spent on the course and a digital badge.

All course materials are available on TESOL’s online course platform. Cost for the materials is included in the registration fee.
