Whether you are an experienced English language educator or new to working with multilingual learners, The 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners® provides a research-based framework for creating engaging, language-supportive learning environments where all students can succeed. 

In our one-week, 7.5-hour live online The 6 Principles Workshop, you’ll build the knowledge and practical tools to integrate The 6 Principles into your teaching context with time each day for questions and discussion.

The 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners®

The 6 Principles are universal guidelines drawn from decades of research in language pedagogy and acquisition theory. They apply across educational contexts for children and adults, dual language learners, emerging bilinguals, and multilingual students in gen ed classrooms.

  1. Know your learners.
  2. Create conditions for language learning.
  3. Design high-quality lessons for language development.
  4. Adapt lesson delivery as needed.
  5. Monitor and assess student language development.
  6. Engage and collaborate within a community of service.

Format & schedule

Offered as a private cohort for your team: five consecutive days, 90 minutes per day, held live online. Miss a session? All sessions are recorded and available on the TESOL Canvas platform for one month following the workshop.

Over five days, this workshop will:

  • Introduce The 6 Principles for Exemplary Teaching of English Learners® and how they apply across contexts
  • Show how to collect and use information about students to build motivating, relevant lessons
  • Explore ways to create organized, welcoming classrooms where students actively practice language
  • Outline how to build lessons with clear language objectives and communicate them to students
  • Identify oral and written English students can access at their current level
  • Help teachers build habits for checking student understanding and adapting instruction in real time
  • Demonstrate how to give prompt, specific, and constructive feedback
  • Introduce a range of assessments teachers can use to improve learning and inform future instruction
  • Discuss self-reflection practices and how to participate in an ongoing professional learning community

This workshop is for all educators who work with multilingual learners of English across content areas, grade levels, and settings. The 6 Principles apply whether you teach children or adults, in dual language, gen ed, or multilingual classrooms.

After completing this workshop, you’ll be able to:

  • Identify and incorporate The 6 Principles into your day-to-day teaching
  • Describe the conditions that support learning an additional language and cultivate them in your classroom
  • Explore the role of language in learner identity and use that understanding to increase engagement and success

About the Instructor

Linda Wesley, MA, has more than 30 years of experience in foreign language education across K-12, adult education, junior college, and university settings. She is the owner and operator of Linda Teaches English, providing individual and small group online instruction to students around the world. She has developed and delivered on-site and virtual training for teachers and students in Bolivia, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and South Korea.
