From Prompt to Practice: Exploring AI Tools for English Teachers

"AI in the English Language Classroom" Workshop

Join us for our comprehensive 5-day webinar series, "AI in the English Language Classroom: From Prompt to Practice: Exploring AI Tools for English Teachers"

This five-day TESOL workshop provides English language teachers with practical, hands-on experience using AI to improve instruction and streamline planning. Each day focuses on one tool: ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Notebook LLM, or Claude. Educators will use these tools to revise materials, level content, and design engaging classroom tasks, building confidence with integrating AI into regular practice.

The sessions guide participants through text adaptation, activity design, research-based planning, and multimodal content creation. Each session will include examples of transforming existing materials for the modern classroom, from updating standards to adjusting contexts. Bring old worksheets, lesson plans, course plans, presentations, and other materials to redevelop and polish with AI tools.

By the end of the workshop, teachers will have updated lessons, ready-to-use classroom activities, and a clear plan for leveraging AI to enhance instruction, increase efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for learning and creativity with AI as a collaborative partner.

Led by an expert in the field, this highly interactive and participant-centered workshop will equip you with a starter kit of knowledge and tools to explore AI in your learning spaces to benefit you and your learners. This live online workshop is 7.5 hours total, taking place 07-11 July 2025 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. ET each day.

All sessions will be recorded and available on the TESOL Canvas platform for participants for a month following the workshop.

Once you complete the workshop, you'll receive a digital badge you can share online! An electronic certificate of completion can be provided upon request.

This five-day workshop gives English language teachers structured, hands-on experience with AI tools to enhance instruction, adapt existing content, and save planning time. Each session will provide an opportunity to go in depth into different models, guiding teachers through practical, classroom-tested applications.

The series opens with the foundations of using AI, from notes about practical and ethical use in education environments, to understanding prompting and customizing LLM models for use. Teachers will explore how prompts shape output and practice adapting lesson plans, objectives, and activities, with ChatGPT as the model in the spotlight. The focus is on using AI to support classroom work while keeping the teacher in charge.

Day 2 centers on Microsoft Copilot. Participants will work in Word, PowerPoint, and Teams to format documents, create differentiated versions of materials, and revise assessments. The session includes strategies for automating everyday tasks using content teachers already have on hand.

On Day 3, we move into the Google ecosystem with Gemini. Teachers will work across Docs, Slides, Gmail, and Classroom to modify and repurpose lessons for different learner needs. Activities will include simplifying academic texts, supporting multilingual learners, and designing classroom tasks that connect across platforms.

Day 4 focuses on using Perplexity and Notebook LLM for research and lesson development. Teachers will search familiar content areas, level the texts they find, and build sequenced lessons aligned to curriculum goals. The emphasis is on turning real-world information into scaffolded instruction.

The final day features Claude. Teachers will use it to create structured activities like roleplays, branching dialogues, and choice-driven writing prompts. Existing materials and themes will be transformed into student-centered tasks that build interaction and engagement.

By the end of the week, teachers will leave with revised materials, ready-to-use tasks, and a clear, sustainable approach to integrating AI into their teaching practice.

This workshop is for English language teaching professionals who want to learn more about AI and how to use it in their classrooms.

By the end of the workshop:

  1. Apply effective prompting techniques with various AI models (ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude) to customize outputs for specific English language teaching contexts.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in adapting existing lesson materials using AI tools to meet diverse learner needs, including differentiation for various proficiency levels and multilingual support.
  3. Design scaffolded, student-centered activities using AI that promote meaningful language interaction and engagement while maintaining pedagogical integrity.
  4. Implement time-saving AI workflows for common teaching tasks across multiple platforms (Microsoft, Google) to enhance instructional planning efficiency.
  5. Evaluate the ethical implications and appropriate applications of AI in English language teaching contexts to ensure responsible integration that keeps the teacher's expertise central.
