TESOL is recruiting new member volunteers for leadership positions with our Professional Councils, Interest Sections, Convention Program Strand Coordinators, and Membership Guides.

We will open for applications very soon! The application deadline is 17 February 2025.

We encourage applications from all backgrounds and actively encourage applicants from ethnically diverse communities.

Professional Councils

Take the next step in building your leadership experience and serve on one of the TESOL Professional Councils. Professional councils provide professional expertise to help advance the association's strategic objectives and activities.

To apply, you must be a TESOL member for at least 3 years and have at least 1-2 years of volunteer experience with TESOL International Association (i.e., having served with interest sections, task forces, or other TESOL entities).

Below are the current volunteer opportunities with TESOL Professional Councils.

The Affiliate Network Professional Council (ANPC) is seeking two new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

About the Affiliate Network Professional Council

The ANPC supports TESOL International Association by helping to foster a strong and robust affiliate network.

Experience Sought

  • Current and/or past members who have also served in leadership roles, e.g., board member, affiliate liaison, with a TESOL Affiliate
  • Conference presenter with TESOL and/or TESOL affiliates

Skills Needed

  • Strong communication skills, through a variety of modalities, for connection and coordination with leaders of the TESOL Affiliate Network
  • Organizational analysis and development within the ELT context across a variety of contexts and countries

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Monthly ANPC meetings

  • Biannual Affiliate Newsletter publications
  • Assist with procedural elements to develop, maintain, and grow the affiliate network
  • Review new affiliate applications and advise TESOL’s executive committee
  • Convene the annual Affiliate Assembly and the Affiliate Colloquium
  • Review and select “best of affiliate” sessions and “affiliate leader” workshops for the annual convention
  • Support collegial engagement with affiliate leaders

The Awards Professional Council (APC) is seeking four new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

The Conferences Professional Council (CPC) is seeking four new members. Appointments will be made for two years beginning in April 2025.

About the Conferences Professional Council

The CPC shall ensure that the content and program of TESOL International Association regional conferences and the Annual Convention are focused on current issues that impact the field of English language teaching, are responsive to the diverse needs of members and the TESOL field and are aligned with the strategic direction of the association. The Council achieves this purpose by collaborating with staff and the Board of Directors in setting the overall goals for each regional conference and the Annual Convention, and providing advice and guidance as needed.

The Justice & Equity Professional Council (JEPC) is seeking eight new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

  • Design and deliver educational programs to build members' DEIA expertise
  • Foster community engagement and participation in DEIA initiatives

The Membership Professional Council (MPC) is seeking two new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

The MPC assists TESOL International Association in recruiting and engaging members of the association who teach English to speakers of other languages in multilingual contexts worldwide.

The Professional Development Professional Council (PDPC) is seeking three new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

The Research Professional Council (RPC) is seeking three new members. Appointments will be made for one year beginning in April 2025.

The RPC informs, supports, and guides TESOL International Association’s research initiatives and priorities in alignment with its strategic direction.

Experience Sought

  • Experience in English language teaching and practitioner and/or classroom-based research
  • Experience of working with language teachers in participatory and/or collaborative research
  • Experience of participating in and/or facilitating language teacher communities of practice
  • A university affiliation is not required

Skills Needed

  • Understanding of methodologies, theories, and topics related to classroom-based research in language education

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month, apart from attending RPC Quarterly Meetings (approximately 90 minutes). Additional responsibilities include:

  • Actively participating in at least one of the RPC’s working groups
  • Assisting TESOL members to report their research engagements in text-based or multimodal formats
  • Reviewing TESOL Award for Excellence in Research applications
  • Organizing, facilitating, or otherwise supporting RPC events including colloquia, forums, or workshops during the in-person or virtual annual conventions
  • Surveying and identifying TESOL members’ research priorities and internal reporting
  • Being active on the council's Microsoft Teams group
  • Serving a one-year term, renewable up to three years

Interest Sections

Volunteer with TESOL and start building your leadership skills! Serve as a leader of one of TESOL’s Interest Sections (ISs) and collaborate with colleagues on shared interests and activities. Interest sections (ISs) review current practice and research in areas of English language teaching and learning. ISs work on communications, member engagement, and leadership development.

To apply, you must be a current TESOL member. Most positions are for a 1-2 years beginning in April 2025 and may be renewed annually. New volunteers are welcome to apply, and no previous experience is required. Commitment varies per interest section, but applicants should anticipate communicating regularly with other leaders and attending online meetings as needed.  

Below are the current volunteer opportunities with TESOL Interest Sections.

Chair 

  • Provide leadership for the AEIS
  • Conduct the annual business meeting
  • Work with the leadership throughout the year on issues relating to the needs of interest sections, including the development of policies and positions for consideration by the Board of Directors
  • Appoint members of all AEIS sub-committees after consultation with the Steering Committee
  • Serve as liaison between TESOL’s staff, board, and general membership
  • Work with the Chair-Elect and Assistant Chair to plan activities during the convention
  • Attend scheduled interest section meetings at the Convention. 
  • Keep the chair-elect and assistant chair informed of all activities 
  • Supervise any special projects granted to the interest section
  • Submit the AEIS annual report to TESOL

Chair-Elect 

  • In the temporary absence of the Chair, preside at business meetings of the AEIS and its Steering Committee
  • Organize the AEIS academic session at the annual TESOL convention
  • Assist the Chair and Assistant Chair in planning AEIS Convention activities
  • Conduct an evaluation of the AEIS program offered at the annual TESOL convention and submit a report to the Steering Committee within 60 days after the convention 
  • Assume the duties of the Chair, if possible, should the Chair be unable to serve the remainder of the term
  • Assist and advise the Chair in his/her duties. Work closely with the Chair in preparation for the following year’s responsibilities 
  • Attend all scheduled interest section meetings at the Convention

Community Manager 

  • The Community Manager shall be appointed and approved by the AEIS Officer for a two (2) year term
  • Maintain the AEIS community in myTESOL, including posting information relevant to the AEIS membership in consultation with the steering committee

Newsletter Editor 

  • The AEIS Newsletter Editor(s) shall be appointed and approved by the AEIS Officers for a two (2) year term
  • Direct the publication of the AEIS newsletter

Chair-Elect 

Working with the current chair, the chair-elect will attend the IS Leaders' Planning Meeting, plan the academic session and (possibly) intersections for the 2026 TESOL Conference (Salt Lake City), and collaborate with ALIS leadership in determining goals, programs, and resources needed for the coming year.  The chair-elect will assume the role of chair for 2026-2027. 

Newsletter Co-Editor 

The co-editor works with other co-editor(s) to produce the Applied Linguistics newsletter. 

Chair-Elect 

  • Assist the chair in all leadership responsibilities
  • Organize proposals for intersection panels in which B-MEIS may be a primary or secondary partner in cooperation with the chair
  • Participate and contribute to leadership meetings
  • Contribute to advocating BMEIS issues to the wider community

Community Manager 

  • Attend and contribute to leadership meetings
  • Manages the interest section community in myTESOL and social media platforms
  • Advocates for BMEIS issues in the wider community

Newsletter Editor 

  • Solicit articles to publish in the newsletter
  • Coordinate with TESOL to get the newsletter published

Chair-Elect 

The Chair-Elect for TESOL CALL-IS plays a vital role in leading and advancing the objectives of the Computer-Assisted Language Learning Interest Section. This position spans three years, beginning with serving as Chair-Elect in the first year, transitioning to Chair in the second, and finally as Past Chair in the third, ensuring a continuity of leadership and mentorship. A key role requirement is attending the TESOL International Convention in person, starting with the upcoming convention in Long Beach, California, where the Chair-Elect actively contributes to sessions, including presentations and workshops, both online and in person. 

This position requires a proactive leader who can foster growth and engagement within the CALL-IS community. The Chair-Elect is responsible for recruiting new members, retaining existing ones, and promoting activities and initiatives that align with the mission of the interest section. Collaboration is essential, as the Chair-Elect works closely with the steering committee, delegating tasks effectively and maintaining consistent communication through email and virtual platforms like Zoom, MS Teams, or Google Meet. 

In addition to leadership and collaboration, the role demands technical expertise and a willingness to learn. The Chair-Elect should be knowledgeable and skilled in the latest emerging technologies, including AI tools, and willing to manage or oversee the maintenance of the CALL-IS Google site and other technological platforms. The ability to delegate responsibilities efficiently is crucial to ensuring smooth operations and achieving the section's goals. This multifaceted role requires a dynamic, team-oriented individual dedicated to advancing technology in language learning and fostering a vibrant community within TESOL CALL-IS. 

English in Academic Settings (EAS) Representatives 

ESP can be divided into two broad branches: English for Occupational Purposes (EOP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It is important that both perspectives are well represented among the leadership of the English for Specific Purposes Interest Section (ESPIS). For this reason, the ESPIS Steering Board shall include two English in Academic Settings (EAS) Representatives and two English in Occupational Settings (EOS) Representatives. The ESPIS is currently seeking nominations for one EAS Representative, who will serve two years as a voting member of the ESPIS Steering Board beginning in March 2025. The primary duty of an EAS Representative is to advise the Steering Board on current challenges and trends in EAP instruction, especially concerning organizing webinars and sessions at the TESOL Convention. For this reason, the candidate should have a strong background in EAP teaching (e.g., within an ESL or an intensive English program) and/or in EAP research. Candidates should also be prepared to participate in (online/remote) Steering Board meetings to plan ESPIS activities. Preferably, candidates should be willing and able to attend both TESOL conventions during their tenure and participate in the open meetings and the Academic and Intersection Sessions organized by the ESPIS. 

Chair-Elect 

  • The Chair-Elect will serve the Higher Education Interest Section (HEIS) for 3 years: Year 1 as Chair-Elect, Year 2 as Chair, and Year 3 as Past Chair as part of the HEIS Leadership Team
  • In the temporary absence of the Chair, preside at HEIS and its Steering Committee business meetings
  • Prepare an updated spreadsheet of the names, emails, mobile phones, professional positions, and institutional affiliations of the HEIS Steering Committee and Nominating Committee
  • Take notes at HEIS meetings and provide a copy to the Steering Committee within 30 days
  • Prepare the primary intersection session panel and submit all relevant data to Mirasmart or other platforms used by TESOL  
  • Keep the Chair and Associate Chair informed of activities through email, text, or online meetings, which includes timely and effective responses to emails and informing appropriate members of the Steering Committee
  • Generally, assists the Chair in carrying out their responsibilities and performs other duties assigned by the Chair

Events Manager 

  • The Events Manager will serve the Higher Education Interest Section (HEIS) for 1 year with a reappointment option for a second year
  • Administrate and facilitate HEIS events, including webinars, town hall meetings, coffee chats, Steering Committee Meetings, and the Annual Business Meeting
  • Coordinate with the Chair, Chair-Elect, Associate Chair, and Community Manager regularly in timely communication  
  • Communicate with HEIS event speakers and presenters through email exchanges or online meetings via Zoom or other platforms
  • Coordinate the publication of planned events with the HEIS Community Manager
  • Coordinate with the HEIS Editor and the HEIS Community Manager to organize town halls on newsletter topics for one month after publication
  • Makes an annual report to the Steering Committee

Member-at-Large 

  • The role of member-at-large is to support, promote, and lead ICIS activities to sustain ICIS’ mission, goals, and efforts  
  • Attend and contribute to ICIS leadership meetings monthly 
  • Facilitate and/or attend ICIS-sponsored activities (i.e., webinars, coffee hour, etc.)
  • Share ICIS announcements (e.g., calls for submissions, promote webinars, share the newsletter, etc.)
  • Participate and/or support ICIS events at TESOL Conferences 
  • Promote ICIS to support recruitment efforts

Chair-Elect 

  • Plan the ITA-IS’s academic session (the Chair supports this role)
  • Work with the Chair in preparation for the following year’s responsibilities
  • Attend all scheduled ITA-IS and TESOL Leadership meetings at the TESOL convention (attendance strongly recommended)
  • Work with the Community Events Coordinator to plan webinars
  • In the temporary absence of the Chair, preside at business meetings of the ITA-IS and its Steering Committee (TESOL convention attendance strongly recommended)

Member-at-Large (2 positions) 

  • Position 1: Plan the ITA-IS networking dinner after the ITA-IS annual business meeting at the TESOL convention (TESOL convention attendance required)
  • Position 2: Plan the ITA-IS Intersection/work with the Secretary and Chair-Elect to plan the Intersection session for the TESOL convention (attendance is required for TESOL conventions)  

Secretary 

  • Attend and take minutes for the ITA-IS steering committee meetings
  • Attend and take minutes for the ITA-IS annual business meeting at the TESOL convention (TESOL convention attendance required)
  • Work with Member-at-Large to plan Intersection session
  • Work with the Chair to write any procedures that need to be documented for the ITA-IS (i.e., elections protocol, etc.) 
  • Organize and maintain files on the ITA-IS Google Drive account. 
  • Update documents on the myTESOL ITA-IS library

Community Events Organizer 

  • Send out an annual survey to ITA-IS members to gauge topics and recommend speakers for webinars held throughout the year. 
  • Organize 2-3 webinars per year
  • Manage the ITA-IS YouTube account by posting previously recorded webinars and promote it on the ITA-IS listserv
  • Coordinate webinars using TESOL’s Zoom account or another institution’s account
  • Promote ITA professional events and share them with ITA-IS members through various communication channels (i.e., ITA-IS listserv)
  • Attend online TESOL leadership meetings for community events organizers

Chair 

  • Provide leadership for the MWIS
  • Plan MWIS activities during the TESOL Convention
  • Conduct the annual business meeting and oversee election of officers
  • Supervise and delegate authority for any special projects that the MWIS leadership has approved
  • Manage special requests assigned by TESOL
  • Inform the Chair-elect of all activities throughout the term of office in preparation for next year's leadership
  • Submit the section's annual report to TESOL 

Chair-Elect 

  • Plan the MWIS’s academic session and informal discussion sessions for MWIS 
  • Assist the Chair in planning activities during the TESOL Convention  
  • Assist the Chair in handling special requests for the MWIS membership  
  • Work closely with the Chair in preparation for next year's responsibilities

Newsletter Editor 

The Newsletter Editor for the Materials Writer Interest Section (MWIS) oversees the creation, editing, and distribution of the MWIS newsletter. This role involves curating content that is informative, engaging, and relevant to TESOL professionals with an interest in materials development. The Newsletter Editor will work closely with contributors, writers, and the MWIS leadership to ensure the newsletter reflects the latest trends, research, and best practices in TESOL materials writing. 

Chair-Elect 

  • Check the TESOL website and e-newsletters regularly and communicate interesting items to members 
  • Read and respond to messages on the PAIS's community
  • Attend meetings, webinars, and informal talks organized by PAIS
  • Work with the current Chair to plan PAIS's academic session and Intersections for the TESOL Convention 
  • Assist the Chair in planning any other PAIS activities for the next convention
  • Work with the Chair and the Board liaison on issues relating to the needs of the IS

Chair-Elect 

The SLWIS Chair-Elect supports the Chair in carrying out their duties and takes on additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair. This role includes assisting in strategic planning, overseeing SLWIS activities, and participating in key decisions. In the temporary absence of the Chair, the Chair-Elect presides over Steering Committee meetings. This leadership position provides valuable preparation for stepping into the Chair role in the following term. 

Community Manager 

The Community Manager plays a vital role in engaging the SLWIS community by promoting events, initiatives, and activities organized by SLWIS on social media platforms and myTESOL. This person will create and share engaging content, such as posts, announcements, and flyers, to foster a sense of community and encourage participation. The Community Manager also attends Steering Committee meetings to provide input and updates on outreach efforts. Strong skills in social media management, content creation, and audience engagement are essential for this position. 

Member-at-Large 

Members-at-large serve a three-year term and provide input on SLWIS's activities and strategic direction. They actively contribute to the development of new initiatives, collaborate with other Steering Committee members, and take on specific tasks or projects as requested by the Chair. One Member-at-large position is currently open. This role is ideal for someone who is proactive, creative, and interested in shaping SLWIS's future. 

Co-Chair-Elect 

  • Serve a three-year term, commencing upon conclusion of the TESOL  Convention. First year they serve as Incoming chairs. Second year, they become Co-Chairs. Third year, they become Past Co-Chairs.  
  • Coordinate Academic Sessions for forthcoming Convention.  
  • Collaborate with other agreed-upon duties via the Co-Chair.  
  • Participates and collaborates with community building and annual report.  
  • Coordinates and proposes other initiatives related to the SRIS. 

Community Manager 

  • Manage the SRIS myTESOL community and social media pages. 
  • Posts on events and activities on SRIS’ platforms. 

Newsletter Editor

  • Volunteer service with concurrence of Steering Committee. 
  • Publish 2-4 issues of newsletters annually. 
  • Coordinates Calls for Submissions/Invited Submissions. 
  • Edits/Works with authors to refine articles/content. 
  • Coordinates with TESOL Central Office Staff to produce newsletters. 

Chair-Elect

  • In the temporary absence of the Chair, presides at Business Meetings of SPLIS 
  • Plans the Interest Section’s Academic Session for the convention
  • Assist the Chair in planning SPLIS convention activities 
  • Attends scheduled Interest Section meetings at the convention
  • Works with the Chair and the Interest Section Representatives on the Board of Directors on issues relating to the needs of the Interest Section, including the development of policies and actions for consideration by the Board of Directors 
  • Assists the Chair in handling special requests of the Interest Section and the TESOL membership. Works with the Director of Member Services to respond to information requests  
  • Works closely with the Chair in preparation for the following year’s responsibilities

Chair-Elect 

The Chair-Elect will serve from 2025-2026. This person will then serve as Chair for the following year. The Chair-Elect is primarily responsible for affiliate outreach and shadows the Chair. Attendance at the annual TESOL Convention is strongly encouraged but not required. As Chair, this person will be responsible for coordinating SSDIS operations at large, co-organizing two IS intersection sessions to be held at the TESOL Convention in 2026, contributing a "Letter from the Chair" to each SSDIS newsletter, and maintaining communications with the TESOL Board Liaison. 

Event Coordinator 

The Event Coordinator will serve from 2025 to 2027. During the two years of service, the coordinator will recruit presenters for at least two webinars for each consecutive year for IS and non-IS members. The coordinator will also organize a networking event for IS and non-IS members during the TESOL Conference and arrange meet-ups at regional and international TESOL Conferences whenever possible. 

Community and Social Media Manager 

The Community and Social Media Manager will serve from 2025 to 2027. During the two years of service, this person will regularly update the SSDIS social media pages, including weekly posts in SSDIS's MyTESOL forum, with information related to supporting students with disabilities and will promote the IS and its events. In addition, the Community and Social Media Manager will continue to develop the IS's presence on the Internet.   

Chair-Elect-Elect 

  • Organizes proposals for intersection panels in which TEIS may be a primary or secondary partner, in cooperation with the Chair and the Chair-Elect
  • Serves as a member of the Steering Committee, takes notes at the annual Business Meeting, and assists the Chair-Elect with the preparation of the minutes; in the temporary absence of the Chair or Chair-Elect at the annual Business Meeting, assumes the responsibilities for preparing the minutes of the meeting
  • Solicits topics, articles, column editors, and other contributions and contributors for various activities (i.e., newsletter, blog, social media, webinars)
  • Assists with social media networking activities and other duties assigned by the Chair and/or Steering Committee

Newsletter Co-Editor 

  • Produce two or more electronic newsletters per year
  • Produces six blog posts per year
  • Solicit topics and articles from TEIS members
  • Identify column editors
  • Coordinate newsletters/blogs with social media
  • Assume responsibilities for coordinating activities across the different social media venues
  • Liaise with the Community Manager

Convention Program Strand Coordinators

Increase your professional contacts, expand leadership skills, and help TESOL develop a vibrant convention program by applying to serve as a Convention Program Strand Coordinator (SC) for the TESOL 2026 International Convention & Expo, being held in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, 24-27 March 2026. 

  • Assist with recruiting and vetting qualified reviewers for their strands.  
  • Provide basic strand-specific input and training to reviewers.  
  • Ensure the quality of comments that reviewers provide to proposal submitters.  
  • Assist TESOL Events staff and the Conferences Professional Council in finalizing the convention program.  
  • Attend leadership meetings at the annual convention as appropriate. 

Membership Guides

TESOL is accepting new Member Guide applications. Member Guides are paired with new members to support the integration of new members within the TESOL community, create or respond to posts in the student club on myTESOL, and introduce student members to communities of practice of interest to the student. New Member Guides are expected to spend approximately 3-4 hours per month on these activities.  

Criteria for becoming a Membership Guide include:       

  • A member of TESOL International Association for at least 3 years. 
  • Attendance at a minimum of one TESOL Convention, virtually or inp erson. 
  • Involvement in an Interest Section, Professional Learning Network, Professional Council, Task Force, Committee, or other activities within the Association. 
  • Broad knowledge of TESOL and its activities. 
  • Capacity to work with others, often in different time zones and locations around the globe. 

Membership Guides commit to serve for a minimum of one year. 

Expectations and Responsibilities of Membership Guides:   

  • Reach out to assigned students via email introducing them to myTESOL and ensuring they are engaging in the TESOL student club. 
  • Create a biography for themselves in myTESOL. 
  • Reply to posts or questions asked in the myTESOL student club. 
  • Create posts or questions in the myTESOL student club. 
  • Initiate 1 or 2 meet-ups on myTESOL with your assigned student cohort. 
  • Invite assigned new student members to events.
