Vance Stevens Educational Technology Mentoring Award

Purpose

The Vance Stevens Educational Technology Mentoring Award aims to support the professional development and leadership of English language teaching (ELT) professionals in technology for English language learning (TELL), with a focus on those working in areas that are underresourced in educational technology and from underrepresented groups, fostering a diverse and engaged community. It connects awardees with mentors in the CALL-IS or the EVO to enhance the success of the awardee’s TELL project through supportive collaboration.

Vance Stevens was a cofounding member and first official chair of TESOL’s Computer-Assisted Language Learning Interest Section (CALL-IS) in 1984. Stevens was an online pioneer, founding the Community of Practice Webheads in Action in 2002 and participating in coordinating the CALL-IS Electronic Village Online (EVO) since 2003. He hosted the podcast series Learning2gether, which has more than 520 episodes, and he was lead moderator of the EVO Minecraft MOOC since it began in 2015.

Stevens was an exceptional teacher and inspirational mentor to countless educators. He passionately believed in collaboration and in mentoring both educators and young learners of technology. With his passing in 2022, his many friends and colleagues raised funds to establish a TESOL award in his name as a reminder of his lasting legacy to the profession.
