Who We Are
Founded in 1966, TESOL is an international association of professionals advancing the quality of English language teaching (ELT) through professional development, research, standards, and advocacy. Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, USA, TESOL encompasses a network of approximately 60,000 educators worldwide, consisting of more than 10,000 individual members and 100-plus TESOL affiliate associations. TESOL offers everyone involved in English language teaching and learning an opportunity to be part of a dynamic community, where professionals connect with and inspire each other to achieve the highest standards of excellence.
TESOL’s core purpose is to advance professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide. With great confidence, I recommend working collaboratively with TESOL International Association to bring the Teacher Leadership for School-Wide English Learning (SWEL) model to your school or district. I am an ESL/Diversity Consultant at Heartland Area Education Agency, which serves educators of English Learners in over 50 public districts and several nonpublic schools in central Iowa. With a growing population of English Learners in our rural, suburban, and urban schools, it was crucial to hone our ESL teachers’ expertise to provide English Learner-specific professional learning and coaching to their general education colleagues. TESOL and the SWEL model allowed us to develop the ESL teacher leadership we were missing in our agency.
"The TESOL Core Certificate Program™ courses have supported trainers and ELT professionals from 6 state government partners to use communicative language teaching methodology successfully. It’s been one of the key blended programs to expand professional development support and support India’s national education policy."
