  At its recent meeting, the TESOL Board of Directors approved a revision to its position statement on teaching English as a foreign or additional language to young learners.
• Franklin and TESOL Host First Global SpellEvent Champsionships (August 2009; PDF)
  Franklin Electronic Publishers Incorporated announces it will host its First Annual Global SpellEvent Championship in cooperation with TESOL on Monday, August 10, 2009 at the Jumeirah Essex House Hotel in New York City. Seven countries will be represented at this first competition of its kind.

  At its recent meeting, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), approved the association’s position in support of the rights of Deaf learners.
• TESOL Revises Position on Independent Short-Term TESL/TEFL Certificate Programs (July 2009; PDF)
  At its recent meeting, the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), approved a revision to the association’s position regarding independent short-term TESL/TEFL certificate programs. Typically a full-time intensive program or a series of part-time online courses running 4–6 weeks or longer, short-term TESL/TEFL certificate programs often serve as an entry-level credential to the field of English language teaching.
• TESOL and Franklin Host First Global SpellEvent Tournament in Seoul, South Korea (April 2009; PDF)
  Franklin Electronic Publishers, Inc. (NYSE Alternext US:FEP), a worldwide leader in providing language and related technology solutions and Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), will kick off the first event of the Global SpellEvent on April 11, 2009 at Sookmyung University in Seoul, South Korea. The competition is designed for students fifteen years old and under who are learning English as a foreign or additional language in select countries outside of the United States.
• TESOL Calls for Fairness in Program Reduction (PDF; April 2009)
  At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), approved the association’s position on program reduction at institutions. Recognizing the fact that current economic conditions have caused some universities and post-secondary institutions to make program cut-backs, TESOL urges public policy makers and managers of educational institutions to exercise fairness and equity in administering program cuts and not unfairly target ESOL programs.
• TESOL States Position on English Entrance Exams at Colleges and Universities (PDF; April 2009)
  At its recent meeting, the Board of Directors of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), approved the association’s position on the use of English Entrance Exams at post-secondary institutions. As more countries are instituting language proficiency exams, TESOL urges against the practice of using such exams as sole criterion to determine entrance to education programs at the tertiary education level.

  Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), announces it will be honoring Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) at the opening plenary of its 43rd Annual Convention and Exhibit in Denver, Colorado, USA. Rep. Polis will be recognized for his leadership in advancing educational opportunities for immigrant students in Colorado.

• TESOL & Title I Directors Joint Statement on Title III Grant Administration Reorganization (October 2008; PDF)
  In June 2008, the US Department of Education announced a reorganization of the administration of the Title III state grants under No Child Left Behind to be implemented in the fall. On October 27, the National Association of State Title I Directors and TESOL issued this joint statement on the issues of concern regarding this reorganization.
• TESOL Statement on Oregon Measure 58 (October 2008; PDF)
  On November 4, 2008, voters in the state of Oregon will be asked to vote on ballot Measure 58, which seeks to amend Oregon state statute to require “English immersion” programs for English language learners in public schools. If passed, Measure 58 would establish strict limits on the amount of specialized language instruction English language learners receive based on the grade of entry in public schools, terminating English as a second language (ESL) instruction after one (1) or two (2) years. Moreover, the measure would effectively forbid bilingual education programs such as two-way immersion.
