Charge

The Book Publications Committee serves as an acquisitions and review committee to develop appropriate publishing plans for books and series that support TESOL's mission and needs. Members of the committee identify themes or areas of interest suitable for publication, given TESOL's mandate, structure, and market position. They then identify authors and editors who can contribute suitable manuscripts. Potential books include professional development texts, collections on current issues and approaches in TESOL, resource books for classroom teachers and program administrators, and classroom materials for the teacher. TESOL does not publish student texts. The committee seeks works that are of high quality, appealing to its members, representative of current practice in TESOL, and beneficial to TESOL's image in the educational community.

Responsibilities

Committee appointments are for three years. Committee members are expected to participate actively in evaluating manuscripts. Members work throughout the year, communicating by mail, e-mail, telephone, and fax to offer guidance to potential authors. The committee also meets during the annual convention each March to evaluate the previous year's achievement and set a course for the coming year. Throughout the year, committee members are asked to review manuscripts in a timely manner and to suggest other reviewers who can comment on manuscripts and proposals within their areas of specialization.

Qualifications

Committee members are expected to have knowledge of publications in the field of TESOL, to have a background in TESOL, and to be able to read and evaluate manuscripts critically and offer suggestions for improvement. Familiarity with the process of writing for publication or with selecting professional books is an advantage. Knowledge of the needs of teachers and other members of the profession is also essential.
