  Everyone who has heard my story has said “what a brave move”. It’s been nine years and I still remember, like it was yesterday, how I was scared and tired on my very first day in a new country.

  I began teaching English as a Second Language in 1962 in Tucson, Arizona, in the United States, at Pueblo High School. The school closely reflected the area's culture, and the students had very close ties, not only to their families, but to the school itself. The neighborhood was very poor economically, and many of the homes had only one bedroom (two at most) with dirt floors throughout.
