Call for Volunteers

Interest Sections

Volunteer with TESOL and start building your leadership skills! Serve as a leader of one of TESOL’s Interest Sections and collaborate with colleagues on shared interests and activities. Interest sections (ISs) review current practice and research in areas of English language teaching and learning. ISs work on communications, member engagement, and leadership development.

To apply, you must be a current TESOL member. Most positions are for a 1-year term beginning in April 2024 and may be renewed annually. New volunteers are welcome to apply, and no previous experience is required. Commitment varies per interest section, but applicants should anticipate communicating regularly with other leaders and attending online meetings as needed.  

Below are the current volunteer opportunities with TESOL Interest Sections.

Chair-Elect

  • Assists the chair in all leadership responsibilities.
  • Participates and contributes to leadership meetings.
  • Contributes to advocating BMEIS issues to the wider community.

Community Manager

  • Attends and contributes to leadership meetings.
  • Manages social media platforms for the interest section and advocates BMEIS issues to the wider community.

Chair-Elect

  • Organizes academic, intersection, and discussion sessions.
  • Runs last meeting during the conference as the new chair.
  • Helps current chair with any other duties assigned.

Member-at-Large (2 positions): Works collaboratively on the planning, organizing, and implementing Technology Showcase events such as webinars, convention session webcasting, social media engagement, and CALL-IS community outreach and support.

  • Determines policies for the operation of the CALL-IS.
  • Conducts long-range planning for the CALL-IS, developing projects and programs necessary to achieve the goals of TESOL and CALL-IS
  • Supports the chair and chair-elect in efforts to obtain close liaison with other TESOL groups and other professional organizations having similar concerns.
  • Establishes committees as required and gives them specific directions and instructions to approve the appointments of all members by the chair.

Chair-Elect: Assists chair in creating activities for all members of the community.

Newsletter Editor (2 available)

  • Solicits articles to publish in the newsletter, which is biannual.
  • Coordinates with TESOL to get the newsletter published.

Associate Chair

  • In the temporary absence of the chair and the chair-elect, the associate chair presides at all HEIS and Steering Committee meetings.
  • Assists the chair-elect, past chair, and Nominating Committee with planning the HEIS program for the TESOL annual convention.
  • Prepares a secondary intersection session panel and submits all relevant data to TESOL.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the chair.

Community Manager

  • Updates leadership positions and maintains HEIS permanent records and archives on myTESOL.
  • Manages the HEIS community on myTESOL and social media.
  • Maintains membership lists and tracks membership.
  • Creates a report on HEIS membership and member interaction for the annual convention HEIS business meeting.
  • Coordinate with the HEIS editor and the HEIS events manager to organize town halls on newsletter topics one month after publication. 
  • Posts a discussion prompt on a topic of interest, especially when 30 days have passed without a post on the HEIS Community on myTESOL.

Newsletter Editor

  • Directs the publication of at least one HEIS newsletter through timely and effective communication with the Chair and publication committee.
  • Liaison to TESOL for the publication of all IS newsletters.
  • Makes an annual report to the Steering Committee.
  • Moderates town halls one month after the newsletter's publication in collaboration with the events and community managers.

Newsletter Editor

  • Solicits contributions.
  • Evaluates the quality of writing and support authors in the revision process.
  • Assembles the newsletter.
  • Communicates the finished product with TESOL.

Member-at-Large (2-3 positions): Participates in monthly leadership meetings, promotes ICIS activities, and assists leadership in substantial ways, such as leading coffee hour meetings.

Chair-Elect

  • Plans the academic session (the chair supports this role).
  • Works with the chair in preparation for the following year’s responsibilities.
  • Attends all scheduled ITAIS and TESOL leadership meetings at the TESOL convention (attendance strongly recommended).
  • Works with the community events coordinator to plan webinars.
  • In the temporary absence of the chair, preside at ITAIS and its steering committee business meetings.

Secretary

  • Attends and takes minutes for the ITAIS steering committee meetings and annual business meetings at the TESOL convention (TESOL convention attendance required).
  • Works with member-at-large to plan Intersection sessions.
  • Works with the chair to write any procedures that need to be documented for the ITAIS (i.e., elections+ protocol, etc.).
  • Organizes and maintains files on the ITAIS Google Drive account and updates documents on the myTESOL ITAIS library.

Members-at-Large (2 positions)

  • Position 1: Plans ITAIS networking dinner after the ITAIS annual business meeting at the TESOL convention (TESOL convention attendance required).
  • Position 2: Plans ITAIS Intersection/work with secretary and chair-elect to plan Intersection session for TESOL convention (TESOL convention attendance required).

Newsletter Editor

  • Directs the publication of the ITA-IS newsletter.
  • Liaison with editors of TESOL publications, affiliate newsletters, and other IS newsletters.
  • Post calls for submissions on the ITA-IS listserv.
  • Accept, edit, and send revisions to submitters.
  • Confirm formatting requirements for all accepted submissions.
  • Resize submitted photos.
  • Attend online TESOL leadership meeting for newsletter editors.

Community Events Organizer (1-2 positions)

  • Sends out an annual survey to ITA-IS members to gauge topics and recommended speakers for webinars held throughout the year.
  • Organizes 2-3 webinars per year.
  • Manages the ITAIS YouTube account by posting previously recorded webinars and promoting it on the ITA-IS listserv.
  • Coordinates webinars using TESOL’s Zoom account or another institution’s account.
  • Promotes ITAIS professional events and shares with ITAIS members through various communication channels (i.e., ITA-IS listserv).
  • Attends online TESOL leadership meetings for community events organizers.

Chair-Elect

  • In the temporary absence of the chair, presides at all SLWIS and steering committee meetings.
  • Prepares, in cooperation with the chair, SLW-IS’s segment within the general TESOL convention program, including the academic and discussion sessions.
  • Conducts an evaluation of the SLWIS program offered at the annual TESOL convention and submits a report to the steering committee within 30 days after the meeting. This report should include recommendations for changes to be made the following year.
  • Assists the chair in carrying out their responsibilities and performs other duties assigned by the chair.
  • Serves as a voting member of the Steering Committee.
  • Conducts an evaluation of the SLW-IS program offered at the annual TESOL convention and submits a report to the steering committee within 60 days after the convention. This report could include recommendations for changes to be made the following year.

Members-at-Large

  • Supports the chair and chair-elect in efforts to obtain close liaison with other TESOL groups and other professional organizations having similar concerns.
  • Organizes a town hall or a webinar once a year.
  • Provides ideas for community engagement.

Co-Chair-Elect (2 positions)

  • Coordinates the academic session for the forthcoming convention.
  • Other agreed-upon duties via the co-chairs.

Chair-Elect: Supports the Chair in any IS duties such as recruiting webinar speakers and panelists, setting up webinars and TESOL panels, recruiting members to the IS, communicating amongst the rest of the steering committee, and addressing or delegating other tasks as needed. 

Community Manager: Advertises SPLIS events on the myTESOL page as well as on social media. 

Newsletter Editor: Recruits submissions and edits articles for the SPLIS newsletter, As We Speak, twice annually.  

Member-at-Large (2 positions): Takes on tasks as needed, possibly including a journal/article/book discussion and/or a podcast. 

Chair-Elect-Elect

  • Organizes proposals for intersection panels in which TEIS may be a primary or secondary partner, in cooperation with the chair and the chair-elect.
  • Serves as a member of the steering committee.
  • Takes notes at the annual business meeting and assists the chair-elect with preparing the minutes.
  • In the temporary absence of the chair or chair-elect at the annual business meeting, assumes the responsibilities for preparing the meeting minutes.
  • Solicits topics, articles, column editors, and other contributions and contributors for various activities (i.e., newsletter, blog, social media, webinars).
  • Assists with social media networking activities and other duties assigned by the chair and/or steering committee.

Professional Councils

Take the next step in building your leadership experience and serve on one of the TESOL Professional Councils. Professional councils provide professional expertise to help advance the association's strategic objectives and activities.

To apply, you must be a TESOL member for at least 3 years and have at least 1-2 years of volunteer experience with TESOL International Association (i.e., having served with interest sections, task forces, or other TESOL entities).

The Affiliate Network Professional Council is seeking four new members. Appointments will be made for 1 year beginning in April 2024.

About the Affiliate Networking Professional Council

The Affiliate Network Professional Council (ANPC) supports TESOL International Association by helping to foster a strong and robust affiliate network.

Experience Sought

  • Current and/or past members who have also served in leadership roles, e.g., board member, affiliate liaison, with a TESOL affiliate.
  • Conference presenter with TESOL and/or TESOL affiliates.
  • Experience with affiliate organization and management

Skills Needed

  • Strong communication skills, through a variety of modalities, for connection and coordination with leaders of the TESOL Affiliate Network.
  • Organizational analysis and development within the ELT context across a variety of contexts and countries.

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month. Additional responsibilities include.

  • Attend monthly ANPC meetings.
  • Contribute to biannual affiliate newsletter publications.
  • Assist with procedural elements to develop, maintain, and grow the affiliate network.
  • Review new affiliate applications and advise TESOL’s executive committee.
  • Convene the annual Affiliate Assembly and the Affiliate Colloquium.
  • Review and select “best of affiliate” sessions for the annual convention.
  • Support collegial engagement with affiliate leaders.

The Conferences Professional Council is seeking five new members. Appointments will be made for 2 years beginning in April 2024.

About the Conferences Professional Council

The Conferences Professional Council shall ensure that the content and program of TESOL International Association regional conferences and the annual convention are focused on current issues that impact the field of English language teaching, are responsive to the diverse needs of members and the TESOL field, and are aligned with the strategic direction of the association. The council achieves this purpose by collaborating with staff and the board of directors in setting the overall goals for each regional conference and the annual convention, and providing advice and guidance as needed.

Experience Sought

  • Planning local, regional, or international conferences.
  • Reviewing conference proposals.
  • Experience with the TESOL International Association convention and/or regional conferences.

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Attend both the 2024 and 2025 TESOL International Convention.
  • Participate in 10-12 conference calls per year.
  • Be active on council's Microsoft Teams group.
  • Respond to emails.

The Membership Professional Council is seeking four new members. Appointments will be made for 1 year beginning in April 2024.

About the Membership Professional Council

The Membership Professional Council (MPC) assists TESOL International Association in recruiting and engaging members of the association who teach English to speakers of other languages in multilingual contexts worldwide.

Experience Sought

  • Must be TESOL members for at least 3 years.
  • Have at least 1-2 years of volunteer experience with TESOL International Association.

Skills Needed

  • Have general knowledge of TESOL, its members, activities, membership structure, programs, and benefits.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • An interest in working collaboratively within and beyond the MPC.

Commitment

  • The time commitment is roughly 2-8 hours a month.
  • Members serve for one-year terms, renewable up to three years.

The Professional Development Professional Council is seeking two new members. Appointments will be made for 1 year beginning in April 2024.

About the Professional Development Professional Council

The Professional Development Professional Council (PDPC) assists TESOL International Association in advancing the association’s strategic direction priority to elevate English language teaching content.

  • Experience in reviewing book proposals.

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Active participation in at least one of the PDPC's working groups.
  • Active participation in at least one of the PDPC's meetings.
  • Reviewing book proposals.
  • Reviewing TESOL PD offerings.

The Research Professional Council is seeking two new members. Appointments will be made for 1 year beginning in April 2024.

About the Research Professional Council

The Research Professional Council (RPC) informs, supports, and guides TESOL International Association’s research initiatives and priorities in alignment with its strategic direction.

Experience Sought

  • Experience in English language teaching and practitioner and/or classroom-based research.
  • Experience in working with language teachers in participatory and/or collaborative research.
  • Experience in participating in and/or facilitating language teacher communities of practice.
  • A university affiliation is not required.

Skills Needed

  • Understanding of methodologies, theories, and topics related to classroom-based research in language education.

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month, apart from attending RPC Quarterly Meetings (approximately 90 minutes). Additional responsibilities include:

  • Active participation in at least one of the RPC’s working groups.
  • Assisting TESOL members to report their research engagements in text-based or multimodal formats.
  • Reviewing TESOL Award for Excellence in Research applications.
  • Organizing, facilitating, or otherwise supporting RPC events including colloquia, forums, or workshops during the in-person or virtual annual conventions.
  • Surveying and identifying TESOL members’ research priorities and internal reporting.

The Standards Professional Council is seeking one new member. Appointments will be made for 1 year beginning in April 2024.

About the Standards Professional Council

The Standards Professional Council (SPC) supports TESOL International Association in advancing the quality and expertise in the field of English language teaching through standards for teaching and learning.

Experience Sought

  • Experience evaluating and/or leading TESOL-related training or programs.
  • Experience with diverse populations.
  • Publications, either peer-reviewed or for TESOL-related organizations.

Skills Needed

  • Editing.
  • Research.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently toward collective goals.
  • Understanding of the diverse needs of TESOL learners and educators in multiple contexts, internationally.

Commitment

The time commitment is roughly 8-10 hours a month. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Attend quarterly planning meetings.
  • Complete subgroup committee work independent of quarterly meetings.
  • Review and respond to requests for input from TESOL staff and SPC committee leaders.
